A. In the public eye, the goal of an Austrian attack on Serbia would have been the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Hapsburg heir to the imperial seat, by Gavril Princips, a Serbian rebel. However, there were many other political goals that the empire hoped to achieve, and the assasination provided just the opportunity to possibly realize them. The earlier series of Balkan Wars in the late 19th and early 20th centuries not only weakened the Ottoman Empire to Austro-Hungarian advantage, but awakened nationalist and ethnic unrest within the empire itself. Serbia gained independence, and the small nation stood stubbornly against the demands of the empire sent in a note weeks after the assasination. The July Crisis, exacerbated by… [cont.]
