Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. Wiktionary is a wiki, which means that you can edit it, and all the content is dual-licensed under both the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License as well as the GNU Free Documentation License. Political corruption is the use of legislated powers by government officials for illegitimate private gain. Misuse of government power for other purposes, such as repression of political opponents and general police brutality, is not considered political corruption. Neither are illegal acts by private persons or corporations not directly involved with the government. An illegal act by an officeholder constitutes political corruption only if the act is directly related to their official duties. All forms of government are susceptible to political corruption. Forms of corruption vary, but include bribery, extortion, cronyism, nepotism, patronage, graft, and embezzlement. While corruption may facilitate criminal enterprise such as drug trafficking, money laundering, and trafficking, it is not restricted to these activities. The activities that constitute illegal corruption differ depending on the country or jurisdiction. For instance, certain political funding practices that are legal in one place may be illegal in another. In some cases, government officials have broad or poorly defined powers, which make it difficult to distinguish between legal and illegal actions. Corruption of all forms is rampant around the world. Worldwide, bribery alone is estimated to involve over 1 trillion US dollars annually. A state of unrestrained political corruption is known as a kleptocracy, literally meaning "rule by thieves". GNU Free Documentation License How does Political Corruption affect people? Q. How does Political Corruption affect people? And the country as a whole? Asked by Haine - Tue May 19 22:57:39 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. One of the main things is financially - political corruption enables people to stay in power ether on the state or national level . While in power they are able to direct tax payer money to their agenda & pet projects - which in turn keeps local donors happy and willing to overlook small indiscretions (aka bribes, slanted bids , etc) It effects the country when it is viewed as the norm instead of something to clean out of politics & costs the country billions of dollars each and every year in not so subtle pork projects to out&out payoffs of government contracts Answered by Akkita - Tue May 19 23:15:41 2009 Will the corporate controlled media ever expose Political corruption like Watergate again? Q. In this day and age it seems as though the "free western media" has just become and extension or large corporations and the government for propaganda. Do you think the media will ever uncover something like Watergate again? Do you think that even if they uncover it somehow they will not actually publicize it? Do you think that corruption like that is in progress but the media won't even touch it? I could ask many more like that but...tell me what you think? Asked by Metaphorbollocks - Fri Nov 7 11:51:08 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. No I feel that they are too tied to business and they are carefully controlled by the mega corporations that own them. It will take a courageous blogger or Internet journalist to uncover something like Watergate again. Answered by Shadow Knight - Fri Nov 7 11:56:22 2008 Why cant the american people see our nation has been overthrown from within by political corruption?
Q. I stold the election for Sheriff twice and am up for #3 in 2010 Asked by Bubba - Wed Oct 21 23:12:57 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think plenty of people see it...they just aren't sure how corrupt and who is the most corrupt...and the media panders to the government so no one is willing to investigate the power brokers in Washington. Perfect example...Barack Obama drafted over 7 billion in kickbacks to unions through the recovery bill...aka Apprenticeship Utilization Requirements...which means any construction contract with Recovery dollars has to have 15% of the money spent at the local union in the form of hired labor or dues...regardless of whether or not the winning contractor is a union contractor. During the election the AFL-CIO and SEIU gave Obama 113 Million of his historic 600 million in campaign funds...while everyone was talking about grass roots… [cont.] Answered by The Federalist - Wed Oct 21 23:25:59 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "political corruption"
